So youâve found the perfect rental in Halifax (maybe through Power & Gold đ), signed the lease, and picked up the keys â now what?
Whether you're moving into a South End apartment or a quiet flat in Spryfield, here are the most important steps to take after moving into your new place in Halifax to make sure everything runs smoothly from day one.

đ 1. Set Up (or Transfer) Your Utilities
If utilities arenât included in your rent, this is job #1. You donât want to be left in the dark â literally.
Electricity - Contact Nova Scotia Power to set up your electricity. This can be done online: https://www.nspower.ca or call 1-800-428-6230
Oil or Propane Heating - Some properties in Halifax use oil or propane for heat. Ask your leasing agent or landlord who the current supplier is â common companies include Irving, Ultramar, Wilsons, and Heritage Gas (for natural gas).
Water - In most rentals, water is paid by the landlord. But if youâre in a single-family home or long-term lease, confirm whoâs responsible and contact Halifax Water if needed: https://www.halifaxwater.ca

đŚ 2. Update Your Address
This oneâs easy to forget â but trust us, future-you will thank you.
đ Update your driverâs license and health card through Access Nova Scotia and MSI.
đŹ Set up mail forwarding through Canada Post
đł Change your address with banks, subscriptions, employer/payroll, and any government benefits
đ 3. Book Internet & TV Installation (Early!)
Internet providers in Halifax book up fast, especially at the beginning of the month. Avoid the âno-WIFI-panicâ by scheduling this a week or two ahead of your move-in date.
Popular providers in Halifax (click on any to visit their sites and compare plans):
Purple Cow (Locally-Owned) - from $60/month
Bell Aliant (fibre & DSL) - from $85/month
Eastlink (cable internet) - from $85/month
Starlink (Satellite Internet Now in Halifax) - from $140/month

đď¸ 4. Take Photos When You Move In
Before you unpack, snap photos of each room â especially any existing damage, marks, or wear and tear. Itâs quick, easy, and protects you when itâs time to move out.
Your landlord or leasing agent may have a move-in checklist, but it never hurts to document things yourself.

𧟠5. Do a Quick Clean & Air Out
Even in clean units, itâs a good idea to give things a quick once-over. Open the windows, wipe down the fridge and counters, and flush the taps. It helps you feel like the space is yours.
đ¨ 6. Know Your Emergency Contacts
Make sure you know how to get in touch with:
Your leasing agent or landlord
The building superintendent (if applicable)
Emergency services: 911 for fire, ambulance, police
For noise issues or non-emergencies, Halifax Police can be reached at 902-490-5020.
đĄ Final Tips
Put your name on the mailbox/buzzer, especially in apartment buildings
Learn your trash & recycling pickup schedule (HalifaxRecycles app)
Introduce yourself to neighbours (optional, but friendly!)
Moving into a new rental in Halifax doesnât have to be overwhelming â just follow these steps, and youâll be settled in no time.
